The singer and songwriter Petter Udland Johansen (also known for his ensemble Hirundo Maris together with Arianna Savall) releases his debut solo album with his own compositions: Piano songs between pop music, improvisation and classical influences, weaving together his many interests and influences as a musician.Being Norwegian, he travelled and lived in many European countries, experienced and performed diverse musical styles from pop and folk music to Early and Medieval music.This very personal album is a colorful, emotional and deeply honest expression of a distinctive musical soul travelling the many roads of life.credits

Since time immemorial, music and poetry have been the bridge between cultures, a universal language that transcends borders and unites hearts. Looking for New Horizons is a musical journey spanning from the rugged fjords of Norway to the mystical lands of the Ottoman Empire—a journey through time and sound, echoing the steps of medieval travelers, pilgrims, poets, and minstrels who once wandered these paths.

In an age when a voyage from Scandinavia to the eastern Mediterranean could take months, even years, there was time to listen, to learn, to absorb the melodies and stories of the lands along the way. Each stop along this journey brings with it a new landscape, a new soundscape—a tapestry woven from the traditions of the North, the Flemish lands, the courts of France, the bustling streets of Spain, the poetic heart of Italy, and the mesmerizing shores of the Mediterranean. These lands, though diverse, share a deep-rooted connection: an artistic expression that speaks to the human spirit, an unspoken dialogue carried by the winds of time.

Poésie et Musique

Hirundo Maris has continually explored new musical worlds and forms of expression since its founding in 2009 under the direction of Arianna Savall and Petter Udland Johansen.
Now, with this new project for the Fuga Libera label, they are embarking on an entirely different path—one devoted to the rich and wonderful tradition of art song from the 19th and 20th centuries, featuring composers such as Schubert, Schumann, Brahms, Fauré, Debussy, Mompou, Toldrà, García Lorca, de Falla, and Grieg—all of them deeply significant figures in the genre of chamber music.

“The love for poetry and music that we (Arianna Savall and Petter Udland Johansen) share is something we explore in all our projects with Hirundo Maris,” they explain. “It was very important for us to approach this repertoire in our own personal way—to bring to the music our own sound and our own love. That’s why we re-arranged all the music so it could integrate fully with the musical universe of Hirundo Maris. You will hear a profound love and respect for this music, interpreted in the spirit of Hirundo Maris—a music rooted in the warmth of the Mediterranean and reaching toward the icy landscapes of Scandinavia.”

The Wind Rose

“ La Rosa dels Vents by Arianna Savall, Petter Udland Johansen, and their ensemble Hirundo Maris moves musically and sonically between Early Music and Celtic Folk, with touches ranging from ethereal Renaissance sounds to earthy moments of Bluegrass.

The album is a tribute to the sea, to the oceans and coastlines, and an ode to the sailors and travelers of both ancient and modern times—to their lives, hopes, and dreams.

The wind rose points to all directions of the sky, and thus embraces all cultures, countries, and places of this world.

At the same time, it symbolizes the inner journey of the human soul.

Il Viaggio d’Amore

Hirundo Maris presents here a musical journey of love across Europe, through countries and times both near and distant.

This album features traditional songs, Renaissance compositions, and original works by Arianna Savall herself, culminating in the famous “Gracias a la vida” by the Chilean singer Violeta Parra.

The six musicians of Hirundo Maris weave together the diverse origins of their music into a timeless and weightless dance through cultures and centuries, so that in the end, the boundaries and differences between them are no longer clear—nor are they important.

Love, as the force that unites all, is expressed here directly through music and becomes an experience for the listener.
